I have had several emails and questions regarding the LSIDA open audition call, and how I feel about it regarding our students (Click here for original attachment). Apparently there are a few local teachers who aren’t happy with this program and will not let their students participate.
Firstly, I want to clarify my personal feelings. When ever students have a chance to perform, whether it be for just the audition or for a show, it is a great opportunity!! Performing is the end result of what we train for all year. I feel you get great training here at VanDance…why not show it off!!
Secondly, I don’t feel I am in a position to tell any client what they can or can’t do with the training they have received. I do hope that the participating choreographers have the knowledge and training themselves to provide our students and all of the students safe, good quality work. The few choreographers that I know are instructing, certainly do.
Thirdly, the concern amongst some of the dancers and teachers is that June is usually a quiet month here at the studio. This year we will have tap, ballet and jazz exams June &along with that also goes the extra practices. As long as the exam practices are a priority, as you’ve worked all year for these exams, I don’t see an issue.
Wanted to clarify my opinion as I don’t want to be lumped in with anyone else…lol!!
HERE IS THE EMAIL I RECEIVED FROM LSIDA
Hi Dance Educators,
Once again, LSIDA is holding an Open Casting Call for dancers for our annual dance showcase: Dance as Art.
We invite you to encourage your students and staff to attend. All dancers 13 and up (note: there is no upper limit on age) are welcome to attend this free two hour class on March 2nd from 7-9pm. The class will consist of a warm-up and a few combinations in varying styles in front of a panel of choreographers. Choreographers will select dancers to participate in their choreographic process and perform in the 3 shows to take place on June 22nd and 23rd. Not only does this audition provide an authentic audition experience for dancers, but may also provide them with a performance opportunity. All while advancing arts in Lethbridge as we continue to “build community through dance”.
Feel free to print and display this poster in your studio, or anywhere that dancers may see it, and spread the word!
